Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the technique featured on Oprah with Dr. Oz?
YES! Oprah has two sections on Rolfing on her site. Learn more from Dr. Oz! You may visit those pages by clicking here and here. (links will open in a new window)

How long does a session last?
Sessions last 1 to 1½ hours. Please allow 2 hours for your initial visit.

What should I wear?
During Rolfing sessions, draping sheets are not used. The typical attire for men and women is underwear. It's important for the Rolfer to be able to see your physique and the changes that occur during the sessions. It is also important for you to feel comfortable during the session so please wear whatever you feel is appropriate.

Do I have to do all ten sessions?
No. New clients are advised to try one to three sessions to see how they like it and if the client and Rolfer are a good match. After the third session, serious consideration should be given to committing to the remaining sessions in order to get the full and long-lasting results desired. You are never under any obligation to complete the series.

Can I still see my chiropractor, exercise, do yoga, receive massage, etc?
Except for the day after the fourth and fifth session, you may perform any activities you choose. The only thing that is not recommended is any other form of connective tissue or deep massage. Most clients that receive chiropractic adjustments find that the adjustments are easier and last longer when done in combination with Rolfing.

How is Rolfing different than chiropractic?
Ida Rolf was influenced by chiropractic in developing her work, in particular the chiropractic observation that structure (your form) determines function (how you feel, how well your body works). Traditional chiropractic has had as its focus the skeletal system. She was most interested in the system of fascia - she believed that a majority of the time, the skeletal system was being pulled out of place by soft tissue, and so she focused her attention on the soft tissue (myofascia) instead.

Most Rolfers that I have talked to have found that chiropractic and Rolfing can work well together and are complementary disciplines.

Am I too old or too young for Rolfing?
No. Rolfing is beneficial for people at any age. Babies, young people, teens, adults and the elderly have all benefited greatly by releasing tensions induced by the birth process, illnesses, accidents, stress and the aging process.

How often should I get Rolfed?
It is recommended no more than once a week in order to allow your body to become accustomed to the changes taking place and not less than once every four weeks so that the cumulative effect of the sessions is not lost.

How does Rolfing feel?
During the session you may experience a warm, pleasant sensation from the area that is being worked while at other times there may be momentary discomfort. The practitioner will apply the appropriate pressure, based on the client's needs and feedback. It should feel right in an interesting sort of way.

Early on, Rolfing developed a reputation as an extremely uncomfortable process. Over time, the Rolfing community has developed the work to be even more effective, while at the same time working at levels that are actually more comfortable for the client. In short, most new clients who are worried about Rolfing being uncomfortable no longer find that an issue after experiencing a session.

Does Rolfing have psychological benefits?
While Rolfing is primarily concerned with physical changes in the body, it does affect the whole person. Along with our physical being, we are made up of emotions, attitudes, belief systems and behavior patterns in concert with perceptions of body image that determine how the person is shaped and what their limitations are in how they move. For some people, the physical holding patterns they have adopted can be related to emotional holding or tension. For others, their structure may carry the effects of an emotional experience. Aligning the physical structure is a useful tool and complementary to psychotherapy and/or personal development work.
